Why plastic matters here
Tea is close to a worst case for plastic exposure, for the same reason coffee is: near-boiling water in prolonged, direct contact with a material, every day. But tea adds its own trap - the bag itself. Millions of people steep tea in a nylon, PET, or PLA bag without realizing the bag is plastic, and a widely-cited study found a single plastic pyramid bag sheds billions of micro- and nanoplastic particles per cup. The fixes are well within reach: a plastic-free paper bag, or loose leaf in a stainless or glass infuser, heated in a kettle whose water never touches plastic.

What to look for
- The bag or infuser is what steeps in the water - it matters more than anything else in the setup
- Loose leaf in a stainless or glass infuser is the fully plastic-free path; among bags, look for plain paper that folds/staples/stitches shut rather than a mesh pyramid or a plastic heat-seal
- "Plant-based," "biodegradable," and "compostable" are not the same as plastic-free - PLA/cornstarch pyramids are still bioplastic
