Best Plastic-Free Dishwasher Detergent

Same trick as laundry pods, in the kitchen: most dishwasher pods and tablets are wrapped in or bound with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a water-soluble plastic film that dissolves into the wash. Loose powder or a genuinely PVA-free tablet skips it.

Why plastic matters here

The convenient dishwasher pod is the same story as the laundry pod: that neat little pouch dissolves because it's made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA/PVOH), a water-soluble plastic - and plenty of "eco" and "plastic-free" dishwasher pods are built on the exact same film. Whether dissolved PVA then biodegrades is genuinely unresolved (industry says yes under the right conditions; an independent 2021 model estimated most survives US wastewater treatment), which is the whole reason to avoid it rather than bet on the outcome. Loose dishwasher powder and genuinely PVA-free tablets clean just as well with no dissolvable plastic - and the best of them come in cardboard or steel instead of a plastic tub.

What to look for

Recommended

Every product here we'd actually suggest — best-in-class picks first, then the rest by how plastic-free they are.

Best Powder $ Nellie's Dishwasher Powder
Nellie's

Dishwasher Powder

Plastic-free

A plant-based, enzyme-containing loose powder in a refillable tin - PVA-free by format, and good on stuck-on food. The one caveat is the plastic bag inside the tin.

Best Overall $ Blueland Dishwasher Tablets
Blueland

Dishwasher Tablets

Plastic-free

A "naked" compressed tablet - no PVA film - that drops in a reusable steel tin, with refills in a compostable pouch. Pod convenience without the dissolvable plastic.

Best Value $ Green Llama Dishwasher Tabs
Green Llama

Dishwasher Tabs

Plastic-free

A "naked" PVA-free compressed mineral tablet in a compostable paper pouch - EWG Verified, and cheaper per load than the premium tins.

Avoid

Popular options that look plastic-free but aren't — and whole categories worth skipping.

Dropps Dishwasher Pods Minimal plastic contact

The eco branding is about the cardboard box - the pod itself is a PVOH (polyvinyl alcohol) plastic film, which Dropps discloses. For a genuinely plastic-free option, a loose powder or a PVA-free tablet (Blueland, Green Llama).

Cascade Platinum ActionPacs Minimal plastic contact

The pod is wrapped in PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) plastic film - confirmed on Cascade's own site. It's the dishwasher version of the laundry pod. A loose powder or a PVA-free tablet (Blueland, Green Llama) skips it.

PVA-film pods & tablets (Finish, If You Care, Molly's Suds pods, etc.)

The whole pod/tablet-with-a-wrapper format runs on the same dissolvable plastic film. Finish and Cascade are the obvious ones, but the trap is the eco brands: If You Care's individually-wrapped tablets use a PVA film (per its own site), and Molly's Suds' pods contain PVOH even though its loose powder doesn't. If a pod or tablet dissolves out of a wrapper, that wrapper is PVA - "biodegradable" and "water-soluble" don't make it not plastic.
