The short answer
The oven cavity is rarely the issue - the bundled accessories are. Hamilton Beach's Easy Reach is the pragmatic coating-free pick: a bare galvanized-steel cavity, chrome-plated racks, and no nonstick basket in the box, for very little money. If you want the same with real capability, the NuWave combi steam oven has a bare stainless interior and stainless accessories at a much higher price. The Ninja Foodi SP101 and Cuisinart TOA-70 are both fine machines with a catch - their bundled air-fry baskets are coated, PTFE in the Ninja's case - so they only count as clean if you deliberately cook on your own stainless tray. For plain toast, the Dualit is bare metal and repairable.
Why plastic matters in toaster ovens
Toaster ovens are the pragmatic escape hatch from the air-fryer coating problem - if you get one with a stainless interior and racks rather than a nonstick-coated cavity. Many, though, have PTFE-coated interiors, trays, or air-fry baskets that put a hot coating right under the food. Pop-up toasters are lower-stakes (bread touches bare metal wires) but their plastic housings and internal parts sit next to high heat.
What to look for in toaster ovens
- Stainless interior cavity and racks, not a nonstick-coated cavity
- Bundled "air-fry" baskets are often PTFE - check and swap for a stainless rack/tray
- Use your own uncoated stainless or steel tray rather than the included nonstick one
- Pop-up toasters - bread contacts bare metal; the main concern is plastic housing near heat, a minor one
