Full Circle bamboo-handled dish brush with cream bristles

Full Circle Be Good Bamboo Dish Brush

Not recommended

The classic "check the bristles" cautionary tale - a natural bamboo handle with bristles that are recycled plastic, so the part touching your dishes still sheds microplastic.

We don't recommend this one

The bamboo handle looks plastic-free, but the bristles are recycled plastic - the exact bait-and-switch this category warns about. For a bamboo brush with real plant bristles, see the Zefiro or No Tox Life Casa Agave.

The verdict: Minimal plastic contact

On the shelf this looks like the plastic-free choice: a handsome bamboo handle, marketed as eco. But the bristles - the part that scrubs your dishes and wears down - are recycled plastic (recycled PET), not plant fiber. That's the single most common trap in this category: the natural handle distracts from the plastic bristles, which shed microplastic as they abrade. Recycled plastic is still plastic. It rates a notch above the all-plastic brushes because the handle genuinely is bamboo, but it's not the plastic-free brush it resembles - and it's the reason the buying guide says name the bristle fiber.

A bamboo-handled dish brush sold as an eco-friendly swap. As a brush it works fine, and the handle really is bamboo - the reason it's documented rather than recommended is the recycled-plastic bristles, covered in the verdict above. (Full Circle does make genuine plant-fiber items - its loofah sponge and copper scrubber - but this brush's bristles aren't among them.)

Pros

  • Handle genuinely is bamboo, not plastic
  • Uses recycled rather than virgin plastic for the bristles

Cons

  • The bristles are recycled plastic - the contact surface still sheds microplastic
  • Easy to mistake for a fully plastic-free brush; the natural handle is a distraction
