The bag is untreated polyamide (nylon) monofilament mesh - a plastic - chosen because it's abrasion-resistant and doesn't shed itself. Its job is to trap the microfibers your synthetic clothes shed inside it, which you then pull from the corners and bin. Independent testing (Napper et al. 2020) put it around 54% reduction, the best of the in-drum devices, and its smoother environment may also reduce how much fiber breaks off. The catch: it only protects what's inside the bag.
