S'well Original Bottle

S'well Original Bottle

Not recommended

Stylish triple-walled steel bottle, but the screw cap has a plastic inner body - water contacts plastic at the lid, so it is not plastic-free.

We don't recommend this one

The classic cap is a steel shell over a plastic inner body, so the drink-contact surface is plastic; the glass-bodied Original is the better S'well.

The verdict: Minimal plastic contact

The body is triple-walled 18/8 stainless steel, but the classic Original cap pairs a stainless steel outer shell with a plastic inner cap body and a silicone seal - so the drink-contact surface of the lid is plastic, not steel. The Traveler flip-straw lid is all-plastic on the inside. Included as a corrective: the steel-and-silicone marketing hides a plastic cap interior in the water path. Note S'well also sells a Glass Original line whose lid is all stainless steel with a silicone gasket - that one is materially different (silicone-only) and is not this product.

S'well's signature slim, triple-walled insulated bottle, known more for its finishes and gift-y designs than for materials transparency. It's a well-made insulated bottle sold in a wide range of sizes and prints; the catch is the cap. (If you want the S'well look with a steel drink path, their glass-bodied Original line is the one to reach for - see that entry.)

Pros

  • Triple-wall insulation; strong finishes and design
  • 18/8 steel body
  • A glass-bodied S'well line with an all-steel-lid exists as a better option

Cons

  • Classic cap has a plastic inner body - water contacts plastic at the lid
  • Traveler flip-straw lid is all-plastic inside
  • Materials of the cap are not prominently disclosed
