Hario Coffee Mill Dome (MCD-2)
A retro wood-box mill that is the closest thing to a genuinely plastic-free grinder we have found - steel hopper, ceramic burrs, wooden drawer, and no polymer listed anywhere.
The verdict: Plastic-free
Hario publishes a per-component materials table for every mill it makes, which is unusually good documentation for this category - and the Dome's table lists no plastic at all. Beans go into a steel hopper, grind against ceramic burrs, and fall into a natural wood drawer. Handle, shaft, locking screw, stopper and grind adjustment nut are all steel; the body and handle grip are wood. There is no nylon burr holder, no polypropylene hopper, and no acrylic anywhere.
That matters because it is the exception in Hario's own range, not the rule. Every popular Hario mill puts plastic in the bean path: the Skerton Pro's main body and hopper are polypropylene, the Mini-Slim Pro names a nylon inner burr holder, and the aluminium-looking Prism is ABS on both the inner hopper and the inner bottle. The glass on a Hario "glass mill" is only ever the catch bowl.
One caveat we would rather state than hide: this is an argument from silence. Hario's sibling wood mill, the Small MMR-2, does list polypropylene washers and a nylon blade stopper, so the Dome's shorter list might reflect less granular documentation rather than a genuinely polymer-free build. Two independent Hario listings agree, which is the strongest evidence available, but no teardown has confirmed it. Whether the wood is sealed, oiled or lacquered is also not stated.

A traditional dome-topped box mill: a steel hopper sits above a wooden base, you crank the handle, and grounds collect in a small drawer you pull out from the front. Holds about 35g of beans, which is roughly two cups. Grind adjustment is a nut under the burr, so changing it is deliberate rather than quick. It is a slow, quiet, decorative object more than a precision tool - the appeal is the material honesty and the look, not espresso-grade consistency.
