Owala FreeSip (24oz)

Owala FreeSip (24oz)

Not recommended

Popular insulated steel bottle with a two-way FreeSip lid, but the spout, integrated straw, and push-button cap are all Tritan plastic - you drink through plastic whether you sip or guzzle.

We don't recommend this one

For a steel water path, choose the Klean Kanteen Reflect or the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth with the all-steel cap instead - both keep the drink on steel with only a silicone gasket.

The verdict: Minimal plastic contact

The body is triple-layer vacuum-insulated stainless steel, but the FreeSip lid - the reason people buy this bottle - is plastic throughout. The spout you sip from and the integrated straw are BPA-free Tritan, the push-button locking cap is plastic, and silicone gaskets seal it. FreeSip's whole trick is that you can sip through the straw-fed spout or tip and guzzle from the same opening; both routes run over plastic. The steel body is only half the bottle - the drink-contact half is Tritan.

Lead safety: Tested lead-free

Independent XRF testing of a pink insulated Owala stainless steel bottle (same double-wall vacuum-insulated construction as the FreeSip, exact model not specified by the tester) found every accessible component - including the sealing dot under the base, the interior stainless steel, and all plastic and silicone parts - non-detect for lead. This is notable because the sealing-dot construction is exactly where competing insulated bottles (Stanley, Yeti, Pura) have tested positive for lead; Owala's did not. A trace, safe-range level of cadmium (8 ppm) was found in one silicone valve component. This is the only Owala product the tester has evaluated so far.

The Owala FreeSip is a well-made insulated steel bottle whose signature is the FreeSip lid: a spout with an integrated straw, so you can sip without tipping or tip and guzzle from the same opening, all behind a push-button lock. It's a genuinely clever, popular lid, holds cold for hours, and comes in 24oz and 32oz and a wall of colors. The catch is that the lid - the whole selling point - is where the plastic is.

Pros

  • Well-insulated stainless steel body with a genuinely clever two-way lid
  • Parts are labeled BPA-free Tritan and sold as replacements

Cons

  • FreeSip spout and straw are Tritan plastic - you sip and guzzle over plastic
  • "BPA-free" marketing obscures that the entire drink path is plastic
  • No steel-lid option exists; the drink path is Tritan by design
