Eastman's branded copolyester, a clear rigid plastic polymerised from dimethyl terephthalate, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol and 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol. Eastman launched it commercially in 2007 as a drop-in replacement for polycarbonate, just as consumers turned against BPA, and that is still its market: premium water bottles, blender jars, kids' cups, food storage, shaker bottles and appliance reservoirs, sold on being glass-like, unbreakable and BPA-free.

Is it safe?

The BPA-free claim is true and not a technicality - Tritan is polymerised without bisphenol A. Eastman's published work on its three monomers used computational receptor-binding models plus a battery of in vitro and in vivo assays and reported uniformly negative results for oestrogenic and androgenic activity. The dispute has always been about what leaches from finished products rather than what the monomers do in isolation. A 2014 paper from CertiChem reported that 23 of 25 Tritan items showed statistically significant oestrogenic activity in cell assays after UV stressing, though only 2 of 6 did unstressed; the authors disclosed that they held stock in CertiChem, which sells oestrogenic-activity testing, and in PlastiPure, which sells a competing resin. Eastman sued both companies over how those claims were marketed, a jury found the statements were false commercial speech under the Lanham Act, and the Fifth Circuit affirmed the resulting injunction in December 2014 - which settles what those companies may say in advertising, not what the underlying science shows. Read together, the fair summary is that Tritan is not a BPA delivery system and the strongest leaching claims came from a source with a direct commercial interest, and also that nobody has demonstrated a finished Tritan bottle is inert. The point our ratings turn on is simpler and not in dispute: BPA-free is a statement about one molecule, not about plastic.

With heat

Tritan is a thermoplastic, so heat softens it rather than breaking it down chemically, and dishwasher cycles are within its design range. But heat and UV are what drive particle and additive release from any rigid plastic, and it is worth noting that in the contested 2014 work the oestrogenic effect showed up mainly in UV-stressed samples rather than fresh ones. Measured examples from comparable food-contact plastics make the pattern concrete: in a 2025 study, PET bottles held under simulated in-vehicle heat and sunlight released up to about 10 ppm of microplastics into the water over 28 days. Treat it as you would any plastic bottle - cool drinks, out of the car, out of direct sun - and do not pour boiling water or hot coffee into it.

How to tell it apart

Tritan is water-clear with a faint blue cast at thick edges, noticeably more rigid and better-feeling than PET, and it resists the crazing and cloudiness that polycarbonate and PET pick up after repeated dishwashing. If it carries a resin code at all it is a 7, "other", and most brands print the Tritan name on the product because they are paying to use it. The lookalike is polycarbonate: also glass-clear, also coded 7, but BPA-based - largely driven out of consumer bottles, though still around in older gear and lab ware. If a spec sheet only says "BPA-free", that is a statement about one molecule; ask which polymer it actually is, and whether anything in the contact path is not plastic at all.

Care & durability

Its practical advantage over polycarbonate and PET is that it takes repeated dishwashing without hazing or cracking, which is exactly why gym bottles and blender jars use it. It still scratches, and scratches are where a plastic sheds and where bacteria sit. Realistically it is a multi-year item that outlasts a cheap plastic bottle by a wide margin and will never approach steel or glass.

End of life

Copolyester carries resin code 7, "other", which in practice is the code that means not recycled: no consumer curbside programme sorts it, and a Tritan bottle put in a recycling bin is pulled back out and landfilled. It is a thermoplastic and could be reprocessed if a stream existed for it; there is not one at consumer scale.
