A popular hot-water dispenser whose stainless reservoir is coated in PTFE nonstick, with a plastic water-level gauge - and keep-warm mode holds hot water against both for hours.

We don't recommend this one

The reservoir is lined with a PTFE (Teflon-type) nonstick coating, and in keep-warm mode near-boiling water is held against that coating - plus a plastic sight gauge - for hours to days.

The verdict: Minimal plastic contact

These tabletop boilers are excellent at holding hot water, but the water-contact surface is the problem: the "nonstick coated stainless steel interior" is a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) fluoropolymer coating over the steel, confirmed by Zojirushi's own material FAQ. Zojirushi markets it as PFOA-free, which is true but does not mean PTFE-free - PFOA is a legacy processing aid; PTFE is the coating itself, and it is still there. Worse than a kettle, keep-warm mode holds near-boiling water against that coating (and the plastic sight-glass gauge) for hours or days, maximizing contact time. The lid is stainless with a rubber seal; the outer lid and dispense parts are plastic.
