Best Plastic-Free Kids Plates & Bowls
Plates, bowls, and divided dishes for babies and kids.
Why plastic matters here
Hot food on scratched plastic is the everyday exposure: kids plates get scraped by utensils, microwaved, and dishwashed until the surface visibly degrades. "Bamboo fiber" kids dishware is a notorious trap - it's bamboo powder bound in melamine resin and has been banned for food contact in the EU. Stainless, enamel, and silicone-suction hybrids dominate the real alternatives.
What to look for
- Avoid "bamboo fiber" / "rice husk" composites - they are melamine plastic in disguise
- Suction bases (the thing that keeps the bowl on the tray) are almost always silicone - decide if that's acceptable
- Stainless steel can't go in the microwave - a real workflow tradeoff for parents
- Enamelware chips; ceramic breaks - fine for older kids, risky for throwers
- Colored/decorative coatings on stainless plates (paint, PVD finishes) are a place lead and cadmium have turned up in independent testing - prefer plain uncoated steel or a maker who states third-party lead testing
Recommended
Every product here we'd actually suggest — best-in-class picks first, then the rest by how plastic-free they are.
Rover
An all-stainless bento tray with a stainless lid and stainless latches - zero plastic in the box itself; only the optional Dipper cups add silicone lids.
Stainless Steel Divided Plate
A pediatrician-designed kids' plate that's 100% recycled stainless steel - no plastic, silicone, or paint, even on the colored versions.
Baby Suction Plate
A value suction plate made of actual solid bamboo - not the bamboo-fiber/melamine composite that fills this category - with a food-grade silicone suction ring underneath.
Bamboo Suction Plate
A genuinely solid-bamboo divided baby plate (not the melamine-bound "bamboo fiber" trap) with a removable silicone suction ring - the rare natural-material kids plate.
Mini Mat
A one-piece 100% food-grade silicone plate-plus-placemat with a self-sealing suction base built into the same molded part - no separate ring, no plastic.
Stainless Steel Suction Plate
Double-wall 304 stainless divided baby plate whose only non-steel part is a removable silicone suction ring - steel touches the food, silicone only grips the table.
Tiny Cup (Open Training Cup)
A one-piece 100% food-grade silicone open training cup - no valve, no straw, no plastic; the "skip the sippy" option pediatricians favor.
Tot Stick & Stay Silicone Plate
A one-piece food-grade silicone suction plate parents praise for suction that actually holds - silicone-only, in the mainstream silicone-suction style that leads this category.
Silicone Suction Divided Plate
A 100% food-grade silicone divided suction plate; the eating surface is all silicone, though the included storage lid appears to be plastic (must be removed before heating).
Avoid
Popular options that look plastic-free but aren't — and whole categories worth skipping.
Re-Play Divided Plate
For hot food off a non-plastic surface, choose the stainless Avanchy suction plate or the one-piece silicone ezpz Mini Mat instead.
"Bamboo fiber" / "rice husk" kids plates (generic)
The big trap of this category. Despite eco-looking marketing, "bamboo fiber" and "rice husk" dishware is bamboo or rice powder bound in melamine-formaldehyde resin - a plastic. It can release melamine and formaldehyde into hot/acidic food and has been restricted for food contact in the EU. Not plastic-free in any sense; buy solid bamboo (like Avanchy's) or steel instead.
Melamine kids plates (Corelle and most "unbreakable" sets)
Straightforwardly plastic. Melamine dishware is melamine-formaldehyde resin; "unbreakable" and "BPA-free" don't make it plastic-free, and it degrades with scratching, microwaving, and acidic foods. Excluded on materials. (Note that recycled-polypropylene brands like Re-Play are a different plastic, not melamine - see the Re-Play entry above.)
