Best Plastic-Free Laundry Detergent
The detergent question is really one word: PVA. Sheets, strips, and pods are held together with polyvinyl alcohol, a water-soluble plastic - so the format marketed hardest as "plastic-free" is the one that dissolves plastic into your wash. Powder, a genuinely PVA-free tablet, or a liquid concentrate skip it entirely.
Why plastic matters here
Laundry sheets and strips exploded because they look like the plastic-free answer: no heavy jug, a light paper mailer, an "eco" label. But the sheet itself is bound with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA/PVOH), a water-soluble plastic, and so is the film on a conventional pod. Whether dissolved PVA then biodegrades is genuinely unresolved - industry says yes under the right conditions, an independent 2021 model estimated most of it survives US wastewater treatment - and that unresolved debate is the whole reason to just avoid it. Powder, a compressed PVA-free tablet, and liquid concentrates all clean your clothes with no dissolvable plastic at all, so you never have to bet on the outcome.
What to look for
- Read the ingredient list for "polyvinyl alcohol," "PVA," or "PVOH" - it's the film in sheets, strips, and pods
- A compressed tablet is not the same as a filmed pod - a genuinely PVA-free tablet (some brands state this outright) is fine; a PVA pod is not
- Separate contents from packaging - a PVA-free powder can still ship in a plastic bag; paper/steel/aluminum/glass is better
- Match the formula to your water - simple soda/soap powders can underperform in hard water; enzyme or synthetic-surfactant formulas handle it better
