Best Plastic-Free Laundry Detergent

The detergent question is really one word: PVA. Sheets, strips, and pods are held together with polyvinyl alcohol, a water-soluble plastic - so the format marketed hardest as "plastic-free" is the one that dissolves plastic into your wash. Powder, a genuinely PVA-free tablet, or a liquid concentrate skip it entirely.

Why plastic matters here

Laundry sheets and strips exploded because they look like the plastic-free answer: no heavy jug, a light paper mailer, an "eco" label. But the sheet itself is bound with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA/PVOH), a water-soluble plastic, and so is the film on a conventional pod. Whether dissolved PVA then biodegrades is genuinely unresolved - industry says yes under the right conditions, an independent 2021 model estimated most of it survives US wastewater treatment - and that unresolved debate is the whole reason to just avoid it. Powder, a compressed PVA-free tablet, and liquid concentrates all clean your clothes with no dissolvable plastic at all, so you never have to bet on the outcome.

What to look for

Recommended

Every product here we'd actually suggest — best-in-class picks first, then the rest by how plastic-free they are.

Best Liquid $$ Dirty Labs Bio-Enzyme Laundry Liquid
Dirty Labs

Bio-Enzyme Laundry Liquid

Plastic-free

A hyper-concentrated enzyme liquid in an aluminum bottle - no PVA, and it handles hard water and stains better than the mineral powders.

Best Overall $ Meliora Laundry Powder
Meliora

Laundry Powder

Plastic-free

A minimal-ingredient powder in a paper-and-steel canister - no PVA, no plastic jug, no plastic bag. About as close to zero-plastic as laundry detergent gets.

Best Tablet $ Blueland Laundry Tablets
Blueland

Laundry Tablets

Plastic-free

A compressed dissolving tablet - not a PVA-filmed pod. Blueland explicitly rejects PVA, so you get pod convenience without the plastic film.

Avoid

Popular options that look plastic-free but aren't — and whole categories worth skipping.

Earth Breeze Eco Sheets Minimal plastic contact

Marketed as plastic-free because there's no jug - but the sheet is bound with PVA, a water-soluble plastic, listed on Earth Breeze's own ingredients. For the same convenience without the film, use a PVA-free tablet (Blueland) or a powder.

Tide PODS Minimal plastic contact

The convenient pod is wrapped in a PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) plastic film - confirmed on Tide's own site. It's the same binder the "plastic-free" sheets use. A PVA-free tablet or a powder skips it.

"Plastic-free" laundry sheets & strips (Tru Earth, Kind Laundry, Sheets Laundry Club, etc.)

The whole category runs on the same trick: a light, jug-free sheet that dissolves in the wash - because it's bound with PVA, a water-soluble plastic. A few brands now sell "PVA-free strips," which only underlines that the standard ones contain it. If a sheet or strip doesn't explicitly say PVA-free, assume the plastic film is what's holding it together.
