Plant fiber regenerated from wood pulp, pressed into the soft absorbent sponges and Swedish dishcloths sold as the plastic-free alternative to foam. It is made by the viscose process, which EPA describes step by step: sheets of dissolving-grade pulp are steeped in caustic soda to make alkali cellulose, treated with carbon disulfide to form sodium cellulose xanthate, dissolved into a viscose solution, and regenerated back into solid cellulose with acid. For sponges specifically the viscose is mixed with salt and reinforcing fibers, extruded into molds and set in hot salt solution, and the salt is then washed out to leave the pores. Swedish dishcloths are the flat version, conventionally 70 percent cellulose and 30 percent cotton, an idea patented in Sweden in 1949. The end product is chemically the same base material as paper and cotton, a natural polymer rather than a petroleum plastic.

Is it safe?

Cellulose itself is inert and non-toxic in food and skin contact. Two qualifications are worth knowing. The first is that the viscose route is a chemical process, and carbon disulfide is a real occupational and environmental pollutant, which is an argument about how the material is made rather than about what ends up in your kitchen; we found no source characterising residual process chemistry in a finished sponge either way. The second, and the practical one, is antimicrobial treatment. Triclosan has been registered with EPA as a pesticide since 1969 and is listed by EPA for exactly this kind of use, as a material preservative in polyurethane and textiles, and a treated article can be sold without its own registration under the exemption at 40 CFR 152.25(a) so long as the claim is only that the treatment protects the article. FDA's 2016 rule banning triclosan and triclocarban applies to consumer antiseptic wash drug products, so it does not reach a treated sponge. If a sponge advertises odor control or antibacterial protection, that is a question to put to the brand, because the label is not obliged to name the agent.

With heat

Heat is not a safety issue for cellulose, only a durability one. It tolerates hot water without degrading, and Swedish dishcloths are commonly sold as machine-washable at high temperature. Repeated hot cycles will shorten the life of a sponge well before they do anything chemically interesting to it.

How to tell it apart

The visual test is the scrub layer, not the sponge body. A genuinely plastic-free cellulose sponge is cellulose all the way through, with any scouring side made of loofah or coir and attached by cotton stitching. The common hybrid pairs a real cellulose body with a non-woven polyester or nylon scour pad bonded on, which is half plastic-free and sheds synthetic fiber as it abrades; the classic yellow-sponge-with-green-pad is this construction. Cellulose sponges are also typically sold dry, flat and hard, expanding when first wetted, whereas polyurethane foam is soft in the packet. If a listing just says "sponge" or "cellulose blend," ask three things: is the body 100 percent cellulose, is the scrub side plant fiber or synthetic, and is it stitched or glued.

Care & durability

Cellulose absorbs many times its own weight, softens completely when wet and dries hard, and a dishcloth survives repeated machine washing. Its bacterial behavior is worth being honest about. A 2017 study of 14 used kitchen sponges from German households found local densities up to 5.4 x 10^10 bacterial cells per cubic centimetre, with five of the ten most abundant taxa in risk group 2 and together making up 41.9 percent of the sequence data. Counterintuitively, sponges whose owners reported cleaning them regularly did not carry fewer bacteria, and the proportion of two of those taxa was higher; the authors concluded that resistant survivors recolonise the emptied niches and recommended simply replacing sponges often, weekly for example. That study did not record what the sponges were made of, so it says nothing about cellulose versus foam specifically. The honest takeaway is that a sponge of any material is a wet biofilm habitat, and replacement beats sanitising.

End of life

A sponge or cloth that really is only cellulose and cotton biodegrades and composts, and is much better suited to a home pile than most things in a kitchen. Brands generally make bare biodegradable or compostable claims without naming a certification scheme, so treat home versus industrial timing as unverified unless a specific standard is printed. Anything with a bonded synthetic scour pad, a foam core or a plastic backing goes in the bin unless you can physically separate the layers.
