Luffa
The fibrous internal skeleton of a mature luffa gourd, dried out to leave a stiff open mesh of plant fiber. It is a cucurbit, the same family as cucumber and squash, and not a sea sponge, which is the single most common thing people get wrong about it; picked young at six to eight inches the same fruit is eaten as a vegetable, and only the overripe fruit turns fibrous and inedible. In cleaning goods it shows up as the scrub side of natural dish sponges and as standalone body and dish scrubbers. Measured composition of the fiber is about 63 percent cellulose, 19 percent hemicellulose and 11 percent lignin. Most retail supply is imported, from China, El Salvador, Korea, Taiwan, Guatemala, Colombia and Venezuela among others.

Is it safe?
The fiber itself is inert and there is no leaching question. The real issue is microbiological, and it is documented rather than hypothetical. A 1994 study in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology found that sterile luffa fragments actively promoted the growth of gram-negative species including Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas and Klebsiella as well as Enterococcus and group B Streptococcus, and that new, unused luffa shifted once hydrated from sparse Bacillus and Staphylococcus epidermidis toward a predominantly gram-negative flora, with trapped skin cells feeding the process further. The same group had already traced a case of Pseudomonas aeruginosa folliculitis to a contaminated luffa, and a 2022 case report matched a patient's Streptococcus pyogenes impetigo to the identical strain on their luffa by whole-genome sequencing. Keep this in proportion: that is two case reports and one in-vitro growth study, with no prevalence study and no evidence that luffa is worse than a synthetic bath pouf, which has its own case series. The authors' own advice is the practical answer, and it is modest: let it dry completely between uses, do not share it, replace it periodically, and decontaminate it with bleach at intervals if you keep using one on skin. Widely circulated claims of a specific percentage of loofahs testing positive within a week, or a definitive replace-every-N-weeks rule, do not trace back to any study we could find.
With heat
Heat is not a concern for luffa. It softens when soaked in warm water and is unaffected by anything a kitchen tap or kettle delivers. Drying, not temperature, is the variable that matters for a luffa.
How to tell it apart
A real luffa is an irregular open honeycomb of tan fiber with visible seed cavities and a slightly ragged cut edge, sold as a whole cylinder, a cut disc or a pad. The lookalike is a plastic bath pouf, which is a gathered ribbon of polyethylene mesh, uniformly colored and springy rather than rigid when dry. Color is a useful tell about processing: uniformly pale cream luffas have been bleached, and mottled tan or brown ones have not. A luffa sewn onto a cellulose or cotton backing with cotton thread is still all plant, while one glued to a foam pad or bound in plastic mesh is not, so check the backing and the binding rather than the fiber.
Care & durability
Rinse it, squeeze it out, and let it dry fully in open air between uses rather than leaving it in the shower or the sink, which is the one care instruction the primary literature actually supports. A commercial-grade luffa is not fragile, but it wears down through use and eventually goes soft and shredded. Bleaching affects strength as well as looks: North Carolina State University trials found that whiteness increased with soaking time in 10 percent bleach while sponge strength tended to decrease past about an hour, which is why the recommended commercial soak is 30 to 60 minutes.
End of life
Untreated luffa is plant fiber and composts at home. Cut off any cotton stitching or backing if you want it uniform, though cotton composts too. A luffa bonded to foam or wrapped in plastic mesh has to be separated first, and in practice that usually means the whole thing goes in the bin.
