Hard leaf fiber from the agave sisalana plant, used for the bristles of some natural dish and bottle brushes and woven into scrubbers, mats and massage gloves. The leaves are decorticated, crushed and scraped so the fiber strands survive while the leaf pulp is washed away; only about 4 percent of the plant by weight comes out as fiber. Strands are long, up to 1 to 1.5 m, and nearly white, cream or pale yellow. Composition runs 54 to 66 percent alpha-cellulose, 12 to 17 percent hemicellulose and 7 to 14 percent lignin, so it is a high-cellulose fiber rather than a lignin-heavy one like coir, which is why it is paler, smoother and less rot-resistant.

Is it safe?

Sisal is an inert plant fiber with nothing to leach in food or skin contact. It is undyed in most cleaning goods, and no coating or finish is standard. The practical caution is about form rather than chemistry: sisal is hard and coarse, with tensile strength in the 510 to 635 N/mm2 range and only 2.0 to 2.5 percent elongation before break, so it does not give much. On skin that makes it an aggressive exfoliant, and on cookware it is not the fiber for a nonstick or enamel surface.

With heat

Nothing in a kitchen gets hot enough to matter to sisal. Hot water and detergent do not degrade it in any way worth planning around. Its water behavior, covered below, is the property that actually limits it.

How to tell it apart

Sisal is the pale one: near-white to cream or faint yellow, long, straight and relatively smooth, as against coir's dark wiry brown or palmyra's even tan. The naming is where people go wrong. Parts of the brush trade sell sisal as "white fibre" and occasionally as "Mexican fibre," which is also a trade name for tampico, a different agave with different properties. If a listing says "Mexican fibre" or just "agave," ask which species: sisalana or lechuguilla. On any brush, the bristle is the whole plastic question anyway, since a bamboo or wooden handle tells you nothing about whether the working end is nylon.

Care & durability

Sisal does not soften in water, it stiffens, and that is a mixed blessing. Sisal cordage is documented to swell more and faster in water than comparable fibers and to not regain its shape on drying, so a sisal brush or pad that is repeatedly soaked and dried takes a permanent set and loses its original spring. Wring it out and let it dry fully between uses, and expect it to go hard and misshapen rather than limp when it is done.

End of life

Undyed sisal is home-compostable and rots readily, precisely because it is low in lignin. Cut away any metal staple or wire first. A sisal pad stitched with cotton composts whole; one bonded to a foam backing does not.
