A rigid open-cell foam made from melamine-formaldehyde resin, a thermoset, and best known as the "magic eraser" cleaning pad. BASF launched it as Basotect in 1984 as a flame-resistant acoustic and thermal insulation foam; the cleaning application came almost twenty years later, when Procter & Gamble brought Magic Eraser to market in 2003. It is not a sponge in the absorbent, soapy sense - it cleans purely by abrasion. BASF describes the resin as being as hard as glass and the foam as working "like very soft sandpaper", which means it removes marks by removing a little of the surface, and wears itself away doing it.

Is it safe?

The cured resin itself is benign to handle. BASF's cleaning grade is tested for formaldehyde under Japanese Law 112 and meets Oeko-Tex Standard 100 product class I, the tier used for items in prolonged skin contact with babies, and BASF notes that unlike fibre-based products the foam is not associated with irritation from released fibres. Two things are worth saying plainly. First, the 2008 melamine scandal was about free melamine deliberately added to milk and infant formula to fake protein readings - it has nothing to do with a cross-linked melamine-formaldehyde foam, and the two are constantly conflated. Whether measurable melamine transfers to a cleaned surface is simply not established either way; the foam is not a food-contact material. Second, the real issue is physical rather than chemical: a 2024 study measured 6.5 million poly(melamine-formaldehyde) microplastic fibres, 10 to 405 um long, released per gram of worn sponge, formed by friction fracturing the struts of the foam. The often-repeated "1.55 trillion fibres a month" is not a measurement - it is the press release extrapolating from one month of one retailer's sales plus an assumed 10% wear. Note also that most cheap marketplace pads are not Basotect and carry none of BASF's testing.

With heat

A non-issue. As a thermoset it does not melt; BASF rates the foam for service up to 240C and classifies it B1 under DIN 4102 as flame resistant without any added flame retardant, and above its limit it chars rather than dripping. Household hot water is nowhere near that. There is no evidence that hot water increases shedding either, because the release mechanism is friction, not heat.

How to tell it apart

It looks like a sponge and behaves like nothing else: white or light grey, dry and slightly squeaky, startlingly light (BASF's grade is about 9 g/L), rigid rather than springy, and it crumbles at the corners and visibly shrinks as you use it. That shrinkage is the tell - it is the material leaving. A cellulose sponge is stiff dry, soft and absorbent wet, and does not shrink; polyurethane foam springs back and does not abrade away. Do not confuse melamine foam with melamine dinnerware, which is the same resin family moulded solid and carries a different concern entirely (migration when heated or used with acidic food). If a listing says only "cleaning sponge" or "nano sponge", ask whether the foam is melamine and whether it is BASF Basotect.

Care & durability

There is no care regime - the pad is a consumable that disappears with use. The thing to manage is what it does to your surfaces. Because it works by abrasion, keep it off nonstick coatings, gloss and semi-gloss paint, car clear coat, matte appliance finishes, acrylic and screens. BASF confines its own recommendation to smooth hard surfaces: ceramic and glass tile, stove tops, counter tops, walls, trim and doors.

End of life

A thermoset cannot be melted and reprocessed, and there is no recycling stream and no verified composting route for melamine foam. Most of the product never reaches a bin at all - it leaves as particles into wash water and onto the surfaces you cleaned, which is the whole mechanism. What is left of the pad goes in the trash.
