PEX
Flexible plastic water tubing made from polyethylene whose chains have been chemically cross-linked into a permanent network, which makes it behave more like a thermoset than an ordinary plastic. Three production routes give the three grades: PEX-a is peroxide-cured in the melt (most flexible, kinks can be heat-repaired, uses cold-expansion fittings), PEX-b is silane moisture-cured after extrusion (the most common and cheapest, stiffer, uses crimp fittings), PEX-c is electron-beam cured. It has displaced copper in most new US residential plumbing. In this catalog it matters wherever it sits in a drinking-water path: the internal "separate waterway" many filtered faucets use to isolate drinking water from leaded brass (Delta and Brizo brand theirs InnoFlex/DIAMOND), fridge and ice-maker supply lines, and the feed to plumbed appliances.

Is it safe?
Approved for potable water and, on the health-effects evidence, reassuring - but the certification covers less than people assume. NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 sets health-effects limits on chemicals imparted to drinking water and states explicitly in its own scope that it does not establish performance, taste and odor, or microbial-growth requirements. Within that limit the record is good: a 2014 study of six brands identified 16 organic chemicals, including toluene and the antioxidant breakdown product 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, and a 2016 follow-up found that toluene, xylenes and ETBE were the only detected contaminants on the NSF 61 screening list and were present an order of magnitude below their allowable limits. A Norwegian public-health study judged the health risk minimal for the seven chemicals it evaluated. Worth stating plainly, because it circulates a lot: PEX contains no BPA and no phthalates - it is polyethylene with no plasticiser, and the leachates are cross-linking initiator residues (MTBE, ETBE, TBA) and antioxidant degradation products, not the compounds people fear from soft PVC. The real cost is taste and odor, which certification does not address at all.
With heat
Rated for hot water but with a hard ceiling: potable PEX is typically listed at 160 psi at 73F and 100 psi at 180F, and its chlorine class is the first digit of the four-digit designation printed on the tube - CL1 tolerates 140F a quarter of the time, CL3 half the time, CL5 continuously, each qualified to a 50-year extrapolated life under ASTM F2023. A leading 0 means the tube was never qualified for potable hot water. Sustained operation above 140F, above 80 psig, or in aggressively oxidising water causes premature oxidation and eventual brittleness. Heat also increases what comes out: a 2023 study found markedly higher total organic carbon released at 55C than at room temperature, with PEX-b releasing 7.24 to 15.4 mg/L over 24 to 120 hours. That is the reason a hot-water PEX line is a different proposition from a cold one.
How to tell it apart
Read the print line. ASTM F876 tubing carries the manufacturer, the standard, the size, pressure ratings at 73F and 180F, the NSF-pw or NSF 61 mark, and a four-digit material designation code such as PEX 5306. Decode it: first digit chlorine class (0, 1, 3 or 5), second digit UV resistance (0 none, 1 one month, 2 three months, 3 six months), last two the hydrostatic design stress. Colour is an installer convention for hot and cold, not a material difference; orange oxygen-barrier tube is for hydronic heating loops, not drinking water. If a spec sheet says only "plastic tubing", ask which polymer, and if PEX, which type (a/b/c), what the four-digit code is, and whether it is certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 under the cold (73F), domestic hot (140F) or commercial hot (180F) category. Because NSF 61 excludes taste and odor by design, ask about that separately.
Care & durability
New PEX needs flushing out, and the timescale is longer than most people expect. All six brands in the 2014 study exceeded EPA's secondary odor standard of 3 threshold odor number, one rising from 26 to 75 TON once free chlorine was present. A five-year Finnish field study found TBA and MTBE migration falling steepest over the first 100 days and undetectable at around 800 days, with ETBE persisting 300 to 400 days; a Norwegian study found MTBE below the EPA taste-and-odor advisory after five months but odor affecting some pipes for up to a year. California's plumbing code requires new PEX to be flushed ten minutes, stood for a week, then flushed again, though a 2015 study found that protocol does not maximise organic-carbon removal. In practice: run the tap after any long stagnation, and expect a new system to taste of solvent for months. Sunlight embrittles PEX, so it should never be stored or run exposed.
End of life
Cross-linking is irreversible, so unlike HDPE or LDPE, PEX cannot be melted and reprocessed. There is no resin code that applies in practice and no curbside program that takes it; the available routes - grinding to a filler powder, chemical depolymerisation, pyrolysis - are industrial and rare. A PEX line realistically stays in the wall for the life of the building and then goes to landfill with the demolition waste.
