Phenolic Resin
A thermoset made by curing phenol with formaldehyde into an irreversible cross-linked network - the original Bakelite chemistry, and still the default where a plastic part has to sit next to heat. It reaches this catalog in two very different roles. As a moulding compound it is the black pan handle, kettle handle and pot-lid knob (Le Creuset's standard lid knob, La Pavoni's lever and feet), chosen precisely because it cannot melt. As a paper composite - kraft paper saturated with the resin and hot-pressed into board, sold as Richlite and used in Epicurean cutting boards - it becomes a food-contact surface. The distinction is the whole point of separating contact from non-contact plastic on this site: a phenolic knob never touches food, and a phenolic board is what you cut on.

Is it safe?
Cured phenolic is chemically stable and the measured migration is very low. Richlite's Health Product Declaration puts the board at 60 to 65% recycled kraft paper and 30 to 35% fully reacted phenol-formaldehyde resin, and notes that the hazard statements on the resin safety data sheet describe the uncured factory mixture rather than the finished board. The material is NSF/ ANSI 51 listed for all food contact types, chamber testing to the CDPH method measured formaldehyde emission below 0.001 ppm against a 0.05 ppm reference limit, and an accredited-lab micro-FTIR analysis found no phenolic-resin particles released from the board before or after deliberate scraping, with particle counts at analytical blank level. Formaldehyde itself is listed by the US National Toxicology Program as known to be a human carcinogen, but that listing rests on inhaled exposure in resin and plastics manufacturing, where mean airborne levels reached 14 to 38 ppm; NTP separately notes that ingested formaldehyde is bound and unstable and questions its significance for the general population. So the honest reading is that the binder is real plastic in the cutting surface and we count it as such, not that a cured board is a formaldehyde exposure.
With heat
This is the property the material exists for. A thermoset has no melt point: general-purpose phenolic moulding compounds have heat deflection temperatures of 275 to 360F (135 to 182C) at 264 psi, paper-phenolic sheet is rated around 250F (121C) continuous, and phenolic "will not soften appreciably under the reapplication of heat" - pushed far enough it chars in place instead of deforming. Le Creuset's care guidance rates its phenolic knobs and handles to 200C/390F, with its product pages putting the Signature knob at 480F, against 500F for the metal knobs that replace them. NSF lists Richlite at a 350F maximum use temperature, and Epicurean excludes oven, grill and microwave use outright, so treat 350F as a hot-pan-contact ceiling and not an oven rating.
How to tell it apart
Almost always black or dark brown, hard, dense and completely unflexing. The decisive test is heat: a polypropylene or nylon handle put against a hot pan will gloss, dimple or smell of melting, and phenolic will do none of those things. Be careful with the word Bakelite - it is now a brand, not a chemistry, and Hexion sells polyester and epoxy moulding compounds under it, including a polyester grade marketed specifically for oven knobs. Ask a brand that says only "heat-resistant plastic handle": thermoset or thermoplastic, what maximum service temperature in F, and which resin family (phenol- formaldehyde is CAS 9003-35-4). The antique-trade trick of rubbing a part warm to smell phenol is folklore rather than a test, and a fully cured food-grade part has had its free phenol driven off in the cure anyway. One claim to discount: "meets CARB Phase 2" on a paper composite is marketing, since those rules cover wood composite panels and Richlite states it is not subject to them.
Care & durability
Boards are dishwasher-safe, very hard-wearing, and can be sanded and refinished rather than replaced. What damages them is chemistry and standing water: high-alkaline automatic dishwasher powder and oven cleaner stain the surface, bleach and abrasive powders should be avoided, and a board left wet will warp. Score marks are expected and Epicurean treats them as normal wear. Neither maker publishes edge-retention data, so the common claim that these boards dull knives faster than end-grain wood is unverified in either direction. A phenolic knob outlasts the pan unless dropped, and chips rather than dents.
End of life
Thermosets cannot be melted and reprocessed, so neither a phenolic knob nor a paper-phenolic board has any recycling route. Richlite's own product circularity document makes no recycling claim at all - its argument is longevity and refinishing - and its manufacturing trim goes to local paper mills as hog fuel, which is energy recovery rather than recycling. A worn board or a cracked knob goes in the bin.
