Titanium
A light, strong, corrosion-proof metal, used in consumer goods mostly as commercially pure Grade 1 or Grade 2 sheet. It shows up as camp pots, mugs and sporks, ultralight bottles, and as a bonded or textured cooking surface on a small number of premium pans. The word also gets attached to things that are not solid titanium at all - coated grinder burrs and coated nonstick pans - which is the main thing this page exists to sort out.

Is it safe?
Titanium is about as inert as a food-contact metal gets. It forms a passive titanium-dioxide film within seconds of meeting air, and that self-repairing oxide is why the metal shows very low ion release and why it is the default material for surgical implants. It carries no nickel, so it is the usual answer for people with a clinical nickel allergy who avoid stainless steel. One point of genuine confusion is worth separating out: titanium metal is not titanium dioxide the food additive. EFSA concluded in 2021 that E171 could no longer be considered safe as an additive because genotoxicity could not be ruled out, and the EU removed it from food on 7 August 2022. That decision is about eating engineered TiO2 particles as a whitener; it says nothing about the few-nanometre passive skin on a titanium pot, which is not consumed.
With heat
Titanium melts around 1668C, so heat is a structural non-issue and titanium cookware can be run as hot as the stove goes. The problem is the opposite of leaching: titanium conducts heat poorly, on a par with stainless and far below aluminum, so an ultralight titanium camp pot scorches a ring of food directly over the burner while the rest stays cool. It is excellent for boiling water and mediocre for cooking. Titanium is also not ferromagnetic, so a solid titanium pot will not work on an induction hob.
How to tell it apart
Solid titanium is startlingly light in the hand for how stiff it feels - clearly lighter than the same object in stainless - non-magnetic, and a slightly warm matte grey; heat-tinted or anodized titanium shows iridescent blue, purple and gold that come from oxide thickness rather than dye. The lookalikes are all marketing. Cookware sold as "titanium", "titanium-infused" or "titanium-reinforced" nonstick is normally a conventional nonstick coating with titanium particles added for wear resistance, so the cooking surface is coating, not metal. "Titanium-coated" grinder burrs are steel burrs carrying a thin TiN or TiCN layer. Ask a brand whether the part is solid titanium and which grade, and use two physical checks: a magnet should not stick, and a pan that works on an induction hob has a steel base whatever the marketing says.
Care & durability
Effectively permanent. It does not rust or stain, scratches simply expose fresh metal that re-passivates immediately, and the rainbow discoloration camp pots pick up over a flame is cosmetic. Dishwasher safe, though thin-walled gear is easy to dent.
End of life
Titanium scrap is valuable but there is no curbside route for it; it goes to specialist recyclers or, far more often, stays in use - titanium gear is the kind of thing that gets handed on rather than thrown out.
