Zinc Alloy
A die-casting alloy of roughly 96% zinc and 4% aluminum, universally called zamak and colloquially called pot metal. It pours into fine detail at low temperature and cheaply, which makes it the standard material for cast metal hardware: safety razor handles and heads, knobs, collars, adjustment rings, faucet levers, and threaded fittings. It is nearly always plated - chrome over a nickel or copper underlayer - because bare zinc is a dull grey that corrodes. In our data it is the reason a fully metal safety razor can cost thirty dollars instead of a hundred.

Is it safe?
In a razor the skin-contact surfaces are the blade edge and the plating, not the zinc, and zinc itself is an essential nutrient rather than a heavy-metal worry. Two things are worth knowing. First, chrome plating normally sits on a nickel undercoat, which is relevant if you are nickel-sensitive and is one reason solid stainless or anodized aluminum handles get recommended for that group. Second, impurity control in zamak comes from the specification, not from the metal: ASTM B86 caps Zamak 3 at 0.005% lead, 0.004% cadmium and 0.002% tin, so a casting genuinely made to spec is not a meaningful lead or cadmium source. Castings made outside any spec are a different matter, and they are exactly where regulators keep finding problems - CPSC's testing of inexpensive cast metal jewelry found that plating does not necessarily prevent lead from becoming accessible from the item underneath. For a razor handle held in a wet hand that is a low-stakes concern; for anything a child mouths it is not.
With heat
This is zamak's real limit. It melts at 381-387C, low enough that it is never used where things get hot - you will not find it in a pan, a kettle body, or a hot-water path, and a part that does get hot is not zamak. In a bathroom or a grinder it never sees heat at all. Boiling-water disinfection of a plated razor is fine on the metal's terms; what suffers is the plating and any water trapped in the head.
How to tell it apart
Weight and sound. Zamak is denser than aluminum and less dense than steel, so a plated zinc razor feels satisfyingly heavy but sounds dead - a dull thunk where solid stainless rings. It is non-magnetic. Look at the parting line down the side of a casting and at the internal threads: die castings show a faint seam and slightly soft, as-cast thread detail, while machined stainless shows tool marks and crisp threads. Where plating has chipped, the metal underneath is dull grey-white, not the bright silver of steel. Any listing that says "zinc alloy", "die-cast", "chrome-plated", or simply "metal" without naming a steel is describing zamak - and "stainless" in a razor listing sometimes refers only to the blade, so ask specifically whether the body is solid stainless or plated zinc.
Care & durability
Dry it and it lasts; leave it wet and the plating is what fails. The plating is the wear surface, and once it chips - usually from a drop onto tile - the exposed zinc corrodes to a chalky white bloom that will not polish out. A plated zinc razor realistically gives a decade or more of light use; a solid stainless one outlives its owner.
End of life
Zinc is recyclable and scrap yards accept die castings, but a plated razor handle is too small and too mixed to be sorted out of a curbside stream, so in practice it lands in the trash. Long service life is the only meaningful end-of-life strategy for a part this size.
